The dream of Couture, is it over?

The fashion month is about to start. In a few days we'll learn everything about future trends.

But before ready to wear walks the runway fashion stopped over Paris for Couture shows. A disconnected calendar marks the difference between the two worlds: high fashion on one side, ready to wear on another. Or maybe not. We can guess that wind is changing watching Dior couture show in which the theatrical and spectacular design by John Galliano has been replaced by a more wearable Couture signed by Raf Simons. 

Simons spoken about bringing more reality to couture (source of information style.com), like saying that couture is dated and needs to be reinvented.

Dior is not the only one who chose simplicity on the runway; maybe this new mood wants to make couture more understandable and justifiable to the eyes of clients.

Is there still a place for exaggerated dresses or wealthy women prefer precious, but pratical clothes?

Dior announced that sales of its couture collections went up by 24% in 2012 (source of information fashionologie) proof that Simons design is a winning one.

Moreover what kind of fashion can couture be if nobody wears it, is that something wrong if it tries to please its growing base of clients?

Couture is freedom of creativity, says Franca Sozzani Director of Vogue Italia in her blog. There is no industry asking for the figures. It’s sheer experimentation. This is why when I see too many compromises I feel disappointed.
It’s like having a dream knowing you have limitations. What kind of dream can that be?

Is the dream of Couture over?

The age of pure experimentation and free creativity might be arrived to an end.

For years fashion houses invested money to deliver the dream of couture.

Even with record sales we don't make any money out of it, said once Jean Paul Gaultier.

Even with high price tags Couture dresses are sold below cost prices (source Fashion Telegraph). So why is still going on?

Haute couture is what gives our business its essential essence of luxury, says Bernard Arnault in 2010, the head of LVMH. The cash it soaks up is largely irrelevant. Set against the money we lose has to be the value of the image couture gives us (source Fashion Telegraph).

Couture can't be a surrogate of ready to wear, says Giorgio Armani in an interview to m.o.d.a. If it has to be high fashion you have to take the risks of making a special fashion. Couture is for the woman that wants to stand out among other women, it's not democratic.

Do you love the new simplicity?

Is this couture modern and fresh or looks too similar to ready to wear collections?

Is there still a place for the dream of elegance or it's time to move on now that brands like J.Crew and H&M decided to show their collections during fashion weeks? (source fashionologie)

Il mese delle fashion week è ai nastri di partenza e in pochi giorni scopriremo tutto sulle tendenze di domani. Prima ancora che il pret a porter scenda in passerella la moda ha già fatto tappa a Parigi per le sfilate di Haute Couture. Il calendario, distante dalle altre sfilate sottolinea la distanza dei due mondi: da un lato c'è l'alta moda, elitaria e sofisticata, dall'altro il pret a porter. O forse no. Che ci sia aria di cambiamento si capisce guardando la sfilata di Dior dove il design spettacolare di John Galliano lascia il passo alla couture firmata Raf Simons, più indossabile e più vicina al pret a porter di quanto non sia mai stata.

L'obiettivo di Raf Rimonsè quello di riportare la couture alla realtà (fonte dell'informazione style.com) come dire che il linguaggio della couture è datato e va reinventato e  Dior non è l'unico ad aver portato in passerella una nuova semplicità, un tentativo forse di rendere la Couture più comprensibile ed appetibile agli occhi dei compratori.

C'è ancora spazio per vestiti esagerati e spettacolari o le donne che comprano alta moda preferiscono abiti preziosi ma più pratici? Il design di Raf Simons sembra essere quello vincente visto che Dior  ha registrato un aumento del 24% delle vendite di capi di alta moda nell'ultimo anno(fonte fashionologie).

D'altra parte la moda è tale solo se viene indossata, che male c'è ad andare incontro ai gusti dei clienti?

L'alta moda è sperimentazione pura, scrive nel suo blog il Direttore di Vogue Italia Franca Sozzani, creatività in libertà e nessuna industria che reclami i numeri. Per questo quando vedo troppi compromessi sono delusa. È come sognare pensando che esistono dei limiti. Che sogno è?

E' finito il sogno della Couture?

Il tempo della sperimentazione pura, di Couture come esercizio creativo slegato dalle imposizioni di mercato potrebbe essere finito. Per anni le case di moda hanno investito denaro per nutrire quell'immaginario di lusso ed esclusività irraggiungibile che l'alta moda rappresenta.

Non si guadagna con la Couture, spiegava Jean Paul Gaultier, i costi di produzione dell'alta moda spesso superano i ricavi ma l'Haute Couture è quello che dà alla moda l'essenza del lusso, affemava nel 2010 Bernard Arnault a capo di LVMH, i soldi che spendiamo sono irrilevanti confrontati con il valore d'immagine che la couture ci restituisce.  (fonte Fashion Telegraph).

Non si deve considerare la Couture un surrogato del pret a porter, spiega Giorgio Armani nell'intervista rilasciata am.o.d.a. di La7. L'alta moda deve essere tale con tutti i rischi che comporta fare un'alta moda speciale. L'alta moda  è per quella donna che vuole azzerare le altre, non è democratica evidentemente. 

Quella che avanza è una nuova alta moda,  più essenziale ed aggiornata o rischia di diventare un doppione del pret a porter?

C'è ancora spazio per il sogno dell'eleganza o bisogna guardare avanti ora che brand come H&M e J. Crew decidono di presentare le loro collezioni in passerella durante le fashion week di pret a porter?

From minis to mid-lenght, we'll wear skirts of any kind. Only one will remain the most difficult to wear: the full lenght skirt in the form of an elegant maxi dress because nowadays there are fewer and fewer occasions to wear it! In days where jeans are often worn even in formal events, elegant gowns are only seen on red carpets. Right from Cannes red carpet we've seen celebrities wear beutiful yet very expensive outfits. Is it possible to create a look inspired to old hollywood glamour with a limited budget? We can start with a Topshop silk maxi dress and then add an Accessorize clutch and when it comes to jewellery we can search for it on Etsy.  Prom or the next marriage you're invited will be the perfect occasion to show your elegance.

Dalla mini alla longette, ci capiterà di indossare gonne di tutte le lunghezze. Forse però la più difficile da indossare rimarrà quella che sfiora il pavimento magari sottoforma di abito elegantissimo poichè in tempi in cui si indossa il jeans anche in eventi formali per esso non esiste più nessuna occasione d'uso se non il red carpet (e il proprio matrimonio). Proprio dal red carpet di Cannes in questi giorni ci arrivano le immagini di attrici e modelle fasciate in abiti di alta moda di grande eleganza ed esclusività. Ma è possibile costruire un look che si ispiri all'eleganza hollywoodiana con un budget contenuto?

Si può partendo da un maxi dress di Topshop e una borsetta Accessorize da abbinare a della bigiotteria vistosa trovata su Etsy. Dove sfoggiare la mise? Il mese di Maggio inaugura la stagione dei matrimoni e sono sicura che un'amica o una cugina vi offriranno l'occasione giusta per mostrare la vostra eleganza.

 In these days mass media often celebrate gross style icons with the exception of Drusilla Foer. Sophisticated and graceful, she's an aristocratic florentine woman. Elegant and cosmopolitan she knew all the

icons of the twentieth century, from Warhol to Yves Saint Laurent and she entertains us with stories about the american jet set. Five times widow of rich men she invented the total black look. How could we not know about her? Drusilla Foer does not exist. She's a character who lives happily between reality and fiction. She became popular on the internet and people say about her that she's an excellent experiment of web theather. The florentine artist who invented her remains unknown, he doesn't want to steal attention from his feminine alter ego. He dreams a day where Drusilla will have a life of its own. As time passes Drusilla is becoming more and more real. She appeared on italian tv and she's been the testimonial of a Luisaviaroma campain against hiv contagion. Drusilla might be only a character but a very elegant one and her pictures communicate real magnetism. I bet she'll get a real Vogue cover one day or another.

In un mondo in cui i mass media osannanno icone di stile spesso volgari, Drusilla Foer si erge ad eccezione. Sofisticata, garbata signora ci svela le sue pillole di saggezza dal suo salotto fiorentino. Elegante e cosmopolita ha conosciuto tutti da Warhol a Yves Saint Lauren e ci intrattiene con aneddodi sul jet set americano. Cinque volte vedova di uomini ricchi ha inventato il look total black. Ma dove si è nascosta questa celebrità internazionale fino ad ora? Drusilla Foer non esiste. E' un personaggio che si muove sull'evanescente confine tra realtà e finzione. Nasce e diventa popolare su internet di lei si dice che sia un esperimento felice di teatro sul web.  L'artista fiorentino che la interpreta non vuole apparire per non adombrare il suo alter ego femminile. La sua ambizione è che la signora Drusilla possa un giorno esistere di per sè. C'è da dire che con il passare del tempo lei sta diventando sempre più vera. Sbarca in tv nello show di Serena Dandini, The show must go off diventando acuta opinionista e partecipa come testimonial alla campagna contro l'hiv di luisaviaroma.

Anche se Drusilla è solo un personaggio è estremamente ben caratterizzato, i suoi modi eleganti conquistano, le fotografie che la ritraggono sono cariche di un autentico magnetismo, sono sicura che conquisterà un vera copertina di Vogue un giorno o l'altro.

Who are the new rockstar?

They have been on t-shirts all the time: Lady Gaga,Madonna,Elvis. Singers,actors and sometimes even models have been our idols and we wore their faces on t-shirts. Now designers are the new rockstars and we are their fans.
Only a season ago Dolce and Gabbana put Johnny Depp on a tee (and we all agree it was a good choice,isn't it?) but now here's a young Giorgio Armani printed on a tee on Vogue's cover and i'm loving it! I'd buy it! And you?

Prima sulle t-shirt c'erano Lady Gaga,Madonna,Elvis,oggi le vere rock star,gli idoli di cui siamo i fan sfegatati sono loro i designers!

Solo la scorsa stagione Dolce e Gabbana ci avevano messo Johnny Depp sulle t-shirt,come dargli torto del resto, ma ecco che per la prossima stagione un giovane Giorgio Armani compare sulla t-shirt indossata sulla copertina di Vogue. A me è come se l'avessero già venduta, e a voi? Vi convince?

I really like this Vogue Mexico editorial,the solid colors of the backgrounds exalt the beautiful patterned dresses worn by Crystal Renn. The photoshoot is a tribute to the mexican artist Frida Kahlo.The styling is a mix between a traditional look and the spring trends in fact different prints are put together and colors are vivid. Vogue Mexico ricorda Frida Kalho nell'editoriale di aprile. La pittrice messicana è interpretata da Crystal Renn. In queste foto gli sfondi colorati esaltano le stampe floreali sapientemente mescolate a colori sgargianti. Lo styling segue quindi i trend di stagione anche se il risultato ha un sapore molto tradizionale e regionale. Se vi piaccciono queste foto e volete copiarne il look,date un'occhiata ai miei set in polyvore in cui ho cercato di mettere insieme degli abiti che abbiano dei prezzi ragionevoli (tranne la gonna di Etro).
