Cut Out Festival dress DIY

cut out diy festival dress, cut out t-shirt, cut out diy

Recently Boohoo invited me to customize one of their maxi shirt dress to create the perfect look to wear at summer festivals. They also sent me a DIY kit to have fun with.
I decorated the dress with roses, crown and a winged heart with the rock writing inspired by the classic tattoo drawings and the spirit of rock.

Boohoo DIY kit

Glue (diyer best friend)  puffy paint and lots of stick on gems.
Lot's of good stuff but today all you need is
  • carbon paper (for fabric)
  • scissors

Thanks to my sister for modeling for me.

Wear the dress and insert a pin where you want the cut out part to start. It can be on knees or above them.
Measure the length from the pin to the hem of the dress, this it the height of your triangle.
Measure the width of the front panel of the dress at the hem and this is the base of your triangle.
Draw your triangle on paper and use the shape as a guideline.
Draw into it whatever you like.
Every part of your drawing must be divided into small parts because you don't want to create big holes into the fabric.
Don't cut out hems to keep the dress intact.

Put the dress on your table and fold it in half vertically to find the middle of the front.
Baste the center line so your drawing will be well centered!

Place the carbon paper between the dress and the drawing and trace the outline of the drawing.
Put the dress on a stiff surface and press the pen to be sure the drawing will be transferred on the fabric.
I also added two little birds just under the bust. One on each side.

     Now the fun part!

    The drawing transferred on fabric.

Follow the drawing and cut inside the edges with a sharp pair of scissors.

This is how it looks once cut. That's it! Repeat for every drawing on your dress.

Now that you have the dress let's talk about music festivals around Europe and the tour dates you can't miss (in my opinion) if you're around (tour dates in the link).
    My suggestions are
The Exit festival in Serbia which is getting bigger and bigger every year. Five days of music from 10th of July to the 14th.
Prodigy, David Guetta, Fat boy Slim will perform among others.

Which concerts you just can't miss this summer? Send me suggestions, they're really appreciated!

Yesterday we talked about wavy hems and how they are trending this spring. I really appreciated how Stella MCartney incorporated curled hems in her spring 2012 collection. Today I'll show you how to diy a similar dress cutting out one you already own. I will also show you a crochet technique to make a cord I used to decorate the dress: it's called the romanian cord (or european macramè).

Start with a long sleeve dress. I made my dress from scratch because I had a very cute piece of fabric that was perfect for this project. The project is all about cutting out so a dress you already own will be fine.
Ready to start? Follow me after the jump.

I put my dress on my diy dress form (or just wear the dress). Highlighted in the pic you can see the part of the fabric you have to cut it out. Start cutting on the shoulders, 1 inch far from the neckline, cut off the cleavage untill the armhole. Also cut off one sleeve.

Now let's cut the wavy hem.

This is how the dress should look once cut
Now let's decorate it! Stella MCartney's dress is heavy embroidered along the neckline and along the hem. To imitate this embroidery I made a few meters of crochet cord (but you can also buy a cord or a cute trim). This cord is called romanian cord (or european macramè) and it's easy to do if you know the basics of crochet, click on this link to learn how to do the romanian cord.

The guide to DIY your party dress using scissors

Add drama to a maxi dress cutting out a rectangle from the side to obtain the Zara dress that is now in shops (pic on the left) or cut a rectangle from the front to obtain a tail dress (pic on the right)

just a vertical cut is needed to make a sexy slit dress or skirt

strategic cuts to make a new neckline or to show a flat stomach and a tiny waist

We all need a new dress for the party season but why buy it when we can diy it?
This is the guide to diy a new dress on a budget just using scissors, no extra money! The game is easy, take a dress you already own, it can be a little black dress or a maxi dress and make some strategic cuts to make it brand new.

A boring blazer,a pair of scissors and lots of beads are the ingredients to copy this look from Berlin: a city that always inspires for clean and young designs.

    Are you bikini ready?

In her new video Beyonce wears a fantastic Jean Paul Gaultier dress. In my opinion it would make an amazing swimsuit! Certainly not suitable to have a sunbath, a onepieces like that is definitely stylish. Here's some swimsuits with cut out details i've found to obtain a similar look! The DSquared2 one is the very beautiful yet the most expensive;you can buy it at shopbop.com but we can get the Asos one for as little as £10 or the H&M version at £14.99.
After choosing a swimsuit like that the only problem left is the flat tummy needed to wear it!
All of a sudden i want to workout more! :P
And you?Are you ready to hit the beach?

E Voi? Siete pronti per la prova costume?

    Cut out overknee DIY

    The inspiration

    the making

These days i've been thinking on the use of tulle to give structure to a fabric.
    What i've done here is a pair over-knee boots-leggings.
The use of tulle allow to cut off pieces of fabric and obtain unexpected graphical effects.
These overknee can be paired with colored tights or flashy leggings.
I could sew them on an existing pair of ankle boots but i left them without the feet so i'll be able to experiment them with open toe shoes too.
I've used a suede like fabric, stiffened it,cut it and then i've sewn on the back side a stiff tulle white fabric with silver thread.
What do you think of the result?

    Pedro Lourenco s/s 2011

    PEDRO LOURENCO-PARIS SS 2011

PEDRO LOURENCOThe last Pedro Lourenco collection is build of leather around the contrast of two colors.
The cuts give us some suggestions to renew the wardrobe.Trousers in two colours, naked shoulders and half sleeves.
He gives us unexpected nude views:we can see legs under the mesh striped dress or above the overknee boots that look like trousers.

Pantaloni in 2 colori, spalle nude e maniche a metà.

    Bona Drag

The DIY inspiration of today comes from these cut out dresses really in the moment. The unespected cut out detail on the ribs is strategic, sexy but not vulgar is wearable by everyone.
I made a selection of these dresses for you, you can click on the images to shop them.
If you have some time we can have some fun cutting out a dress we already own.Try on the dress and in front of the mirror visualize where to cut the dress, on your ribs.Mark with pins where width and the height of the cut, just where it has to start and where to end.
Take off the dress draw a triangular shape, the shape of the part you have to cut, pin it on your dress and cut it out paying attention to leave space for a seam, make sure you leave enought space at the center to keep the dress together.
Refine the cut with a seam.
You can cut the dress only on the front till the lateral sewing or cut it both sides.
You can sew on the borders of your cut a beaded, sequined or studded trim if you like and you're done.

I find very interesting the dress sold at bona drag, the knot detaling on the front.
It looks like this dress can be done with a huge t-shirt dress or a big men's shirt.
Plus for a more parisienne, glamour look you can even make this dress with silk scarfs, even famous brands ones like gucci or hermes turning your diy project in a unique fashion piece.
I'll try to make it and then i'll get back to you with the tutorial!
